Welcome to Elkhorn Elementary

Elkhorn is a small, close-knit family of students, staff and parents where we put students first in everything we do.  With approximately 245 students and 12 classrooms, our class sizes are low and teachers consider the students to be “theirs” kindergarten through fifth grade.  We have several school-wide events throughout the year to celebrate learning and support our school with positive relationships between staff and parents.

Teachers spend time together every week planning engaging lessons and activities, enhancing the curriculum with enriching activities that challenge students and empower them to become the best they can be. We have a strong multi-tiered system of supports that we use whenever we see that a student needs more assistance or a challenge.  We believe all students can learn at high levels and will do whatever we can to help the each child believe in him/herself to do so.

New in 2017-18, Elkhorn will begin an AVID Elementary program for all 3rd-5th grade students.  Students will learn organizational skills through the use of a planner and classroom study binder.  They will learn specific strategies in reading, writing, and note taking that will help them to be successful this year and in years to come.   We will be encouraging all students to have that “growth mindset” and believe that they can graduate, go on to college, or other professional training.

Teachers communicate regularly with parents and families via classroom newsletters and online sources like Twitter and See Saw for sharing pictures of classroom activities.  A monthly parent school-wide newsletter will be sent directly to your email, so make sure you have a current email address in the PowerSchool portal. We also update the Elkhorn Facebook page @ee.essd40  and the Elkhorn Twitter account @EE_ESSD40 so you can have a glimpse into our daily activities here at school.  Please Like, Share, or Retweet our news as often as you like!

This is my first year as principal at Elkhorn, although I have been with the Excelsior Springs School District for 20 years and this is my 29th year in education.  I have 16 years experience as a classroom teacher (8 of those were right here at Elkhorn Elementary),  7 years as the District Literacy Coach and a building Instructional Coach, and 5 years as principal at Lewis Elementary. When the principal position at Elkhorn became available, I just knew I wanted to come “home”!  My husband, Brian, is publisher/editor of the Excelsior Springs Standard newspaper and we keep very busy within the community.  We have 3 children, Brad (25), Laura (22) and Emily (11).  Brad and Laura attended Elkhorn when I taught here years ago! Brian and I both grew up and graduated from Excelsior Springs High School.  We are blessed to call Excelsior Springs our home and Elkhorn is a big part of our history.

I am excited to begin a new year with the students, staff, and parents at Elkhorn “Where Students Come First!”

Educationally yours,

Christi R. Rice, principal
