Welcome to Elkhorn Elementary!

Elkhorn is a small, close-knit family of students, staff and parents where we put students first in everything we do.  With approximately 245 students and 12 classrooms, our Kindergarten through 5th grade class sizes are low and teachers consider the students to be “theirs” throughout their elementary career.  We have several school-wide events throughout the year to celebrate learning and support our school with positive relationships between staff and parents.

Teachers spend time together every week planning engaging lessons and activities, enhancing the curriculum with enriching activities that challenge students and empower them to become the best they can be. We have a strong multi-tiered system of supports that we use whenever we see that a student needs more assistance or enrichment.  We believe all students can learn at high levels and will do whatever we can to help the each child believe in him/herself to do so.

Elkhorn has a working AVID Elementary program for all students.  Students will learn organizational skills through the use of a planner and classroom study binder. They will learn specific strategies in reading, writing, inquiry, collaboration, and note-taking that will help them to be successful this year and in years to come.   We will be encouraging all students to have a “growth mindset” and believe that they can graduate, go on to college, or other professional training. Our strong Positive Behavior Supports and Interventions framework provides consistent behavior expectations in all settings of our school.  Students are taught positive behavior habits and practice these daily. They are recognized informally on a daily basis, and formally each month at our awards ceremonies.  We have an active Student Council that supports our school community in many ways. Teachers communicate regularly with parents and families via classroom newsletters and online sources like Twitter and SeeSaw for sharing pictures of classroom activities.  A monthly parent school-wide newsletter will be sent directly to your email, so make sure you have a current email address in the PowerSchool portal. We also update the Elkhorn Facebook page @ee.essd40  and the Elkhorn Twitter account @EE_ESSD40 regularly so you can have a glimpse into our daily activities here at school. Please Like, Share, or Retweet our news as often as you like! As a lifelong member of this community, it has been my honor to teach at Elkhorn and Westview Elementary, before I began my administrative career at Lewis Elementary.  I have always loved the close-knit, family feel of this rural school. The parents and patrons are supportive of education and teachers, the and the students inspire me every day.   My husband Brian and I are lifelong members of this community, graduating from Excelsior Springs High School. We have three wonderful children, two of which attended Elkhorn when they were young. We are blessed to call Excelsior Springs our home and Elkhorn is a big part of our history. I am always excited to begin a new year with the students, staff, and parents at Elkhorn “Where Students Come First!”

Educationally yours,

Christi R. Rice, Ed. S.
